My first interview is with Arcan. I started talking to him online about eight months ago, researching for myself and for the books I write. The first time I let that email go—talk about being scared is an understatement!– but right away, Sir, (the title he has earned in my book), put me at ease, guiding me and answering any and all questions I had.  Sir was and still is straight forward, holding nothing back from his answers, which totally surprised me and encouraged me to ask more.

Due to the way Sir talks and answers questions, anyone can see the teacher in him. After all the years teaching at universities, Sir still reaches out to help people, encouraging them to learn as much as they can. I’ve met only a few men who amaze me with how smart they are, (I don’t get out much, so no offense to men out there) and they have this way of making you feel you are just as smart. Arcan is one of these men.

When I wrote him an email asking if he would do the interview, he said he would love to, but when I gave him the questions he did one of those smiley faces and told me to do my homework.  For each question, he told me where to find the answers, that if I had any further questions to ask him again. I never laughed so hard when I received his email, but was honored he would allow me to interview him in his way.

The first question I asked was: Please tell us a little bit about your background as a Master/Dom. Here is Arcan’s information after some digging.  Arcan has been in the lifestyle now for five decades; he is a master, dominant, teacher, counselor, writer, lecturer, mentor, and a mage. Arcan describes himself as “A strict, controlling, demanding, yet patient, loving and affectionate Master. Honor, Integrity, Honesty, Principles and Codes of Conduct – these have been and will be the basis of My life.”

The next question had me scrolling his information page for the answer. Were you influenced by others around you? Found it! “I was raised by Old Guard BDSM families in the 50′s and 60′s, took My first slave as a D/s BDSM Master in 1969 and have been involved in this Lifestyle – both BDSM, and Gor from the 70′s -  ever since, right up to this very day.

I have moved between these two worlds, having respect and appreciation for each.”

Third question: Are  you a Master/Dom 24/7? I guess this answer would be the best one. “I demand honesty – without honesty there can be no trust and without trust, there can be no relationship of any kind. I take-charge and control what is in My life – especially YOU.’

Reading his postings, Sir never holds back the truth. One thing I have found is that with this lifestyle honesty is a must.

The next question I asked him: How does one know she or he is a

submissive? Or for that matter, a Master? “If you are strong out there, you are probably submissive inside.  That is just plain fact. So, that means you understand how to stand up for yourself most of the time.  Don’t forget that just because you are online and interacting with someone who is basically a Dominant looking for sex, kink, obedience and service.  You are looking to be controlled, but please do not be foolish in that quest.”

Okay, on this last statement I had to go back to Sir and ask more questions, because it totally threw me. I have read many erotic stories containing BDSM and most of them, three-fourths of them, the woman, submissive, come off as weak, needing a strong hand to guide them.

Sir’s answer: “The answer is quite simple. I am a Dominant. I want and NEED to control, to make all the decisions, to be in charge and to be all that all the time. You do not.

Whether you have to or not, you don’t want or especially need to. That is the basic difference. Inside you do NOT want to make all the decisions – in fact the more you have to make, the less you want to. You do NOT want to be in control – it often frightens you. And, heaven forbid, you don’t want all that responsibility all the time! And that is why on the outside you may not seem submissive, but on the inside you do. Consequently, you may not show it and some may not see it either. But *you* truly know what is inside you – and only you….”

Second part of the question: Dominant, “A real Dominant will not pursue you like a sophomore in school, will not hound you, will not demand a thing from you.  They will just want what everyone wants – reasonable appreciation of their time and respect, respect, respect. Just as you would and do – or at least should! Desperate people simply do not make good Dominants!  Nor submissive/slaves for that matter!”

With BDSM being so popular I asked Sir: Many people believe that BDSM is all about the extreme, pain, torture, so can you explain the different levels for us, please? After scanning his pages, the website and doing other research into BDSM I once more had to return to Sir and ask him how I could explain a whole lifestyle with so many variations.

“Describing this lifestyle in a paragraph is like the blind men surrounding, and trying to describe, an elephant to one another! It can’t be done in one paragraph….”

One of the most important parts of any relationship is that of trust. We all know there are nut cases out there and many seek individuals in this type of lifestyle. So I asked: How can someone explore this side of themselves with so many nut cases out there without getting hurt?

“The goal here is to identify the all-to-prevalent fake lifestylers.  In all this, never forget that knowing, and I mean REALLY knowing, your prospective lifestyle partner as well as you can, is essential long before you meet them in person!”

If you are planning to enter into this lifestyle, Sir has many different articles written on safety issues and what to look for. So I must encourage everyone even thinking about exploring it to read his posts at the above link.

Here is a fact he states to give you an example of his writing on this issue:

“Submissive/slaves must outnumber Dominants by at least 10 to 1 – conservatively speaking.  In a chat room, a BDSM chat room, it would appear that there are almost as many Dominants as submissive/slaves.  What does this mean? That the number of *true* Dominants out there are very few and the vast majority of those claiming to be must be fakes – however you choose to define fakes!”

To finish this interview, I asked Sir one last question: Do you think a new person should go to a private club?

“The short answer is absolutely not, alone. With a friend, someone experienced and well known to you, perhaps yes.” Again caution and safety is the most important thing when venturing into any relationship.”

I want to thank Arcan so much for allowing me some of his time and for doing this interview. I have had fun going back and forth asking him questions. Even though I’ve put a little joking around in the blog post, this is not a joke to him or anyone else in this lifestyle. I applaud him and anyone brave enough to explore their true calling, let alone share with so many of us his personal experiences.

Putting this interview together I went back to Sir to ask one more important question: How has this lifestyle has affected your personal life? Are you open with people around you with your lifestyle?

“A hard question to answer in concrete terms….

I do not speak of this lifestyle with the people around me, often, as stereotypes still abound. Yet, I do not hide anything. If someone asks about the subject, I talk to them about it. I have found, interestingly enough, other than professional colleagues, normal lay people actually have never heard of the term BDSM, or even poly! Surprising but true – surprised me!

On the other hand, the concepts that I espouse in my profile – Honor, Principles, Ethics, Codes of Conduct – are palpable and I do not think that I would believe in them as strongly as I do if not for My background in the areas of BDSM that reflect those above concepts. And, all that *does* affect my personal life….”

No, I have never met Arcan in person, just talked to him online, and he has been the kindest man I’ve talked to in a long time. He asks nothing, but gives his experience and knowledge of the culture to anyone who wants to learn. I bow before you dear, Sir, and may you find that special person you so deserve.

I arrived at the hotel at 12:30 yesterday afternoon. It took me four hours to drive here the whole time I listened to the CD from the move Burlesque. Boy I bet the drivers thought I was nuts sitting there singing my heart out, bopping my head around to the music, but hey love the CD.

Met four new friends last night ended up having four Strawberry Daiquiris, boy I wasn’t feeling any pain. First time in a year that I have had any Alcoholic. But I had a great time Gayle Donnelle, Robyn Mackenzie, Meghan Kinch, Dakota Cassidy and so many others here already.

Tonight we’re planning to go to this Irish Pub were everyone wears the kilt’s! Umm, men in kilt’s it’s going to be wild. I also can’t wait to get Lori Perkins drinking tonight! Yep going to be a great time.

I  planned on sleeping in this morning, but stupid me forgot to turn my phone off. My son text’s me at six this morning getting ready for school! “Mom I don’t want to go to school!” I swear to god I wanted to throw the phone across the room. Once I’m awaken I can’t go back to sleep. So here I am sitting here working on a story, drinking coffee.

Maybe later I’ll slip back into my room for a quick nap before all the activity starts, who knows.

Today I’m going to let you all in on a personal side of me, because I believe this should be said, and it comes from my heart. For many of my stories, I use my own personal experience in the story line.

My writing may be dark, but it’s who I am inside. The first tragedy happened when I was a child by a family member, and the second incident was when I was only fifteen. I won’t go into to the details, because it’s no one’s business but mine. However, rape survivors or any abuse victim, deal with their horrors in different ways.

In my stories, my heroines might be abused or hurt, but they are fighters—just as I am. I’ve come back strong and I won’t take any crap from anyone. I’ll keep my mouth shut when it’s trivial things, but don’t attack me when you yourself don’t know me as an individual. Yes, I have flashbacks, and still to this day little bits and pieces are coming to the surface, but I will not let it affect me.

Abuse of any kind is wrong. Writing my stories in my way, I always like the victim to come out stronger, not afraid, but wanting to explore all possibilities. I’ll be damned if I let any nut case stop me from enjoying anything.  Maybe this is also why I’m so drawn to the alpha male, wanting to be protected and cared for, since I’ve never had that even as a child. I’ve always taken care of everyone and still do, but just maybe in my stories I can have that not-so-perfect male take care of me, show me the things I would be afraid to try by myself.

I’m a survivor, and every one of my characters, in some way, will be too. Just because I or my characters want to give up some control does not mean they are weak. If anything, it means they have set aside the pain and refuse to let any creep destroy them. They still have heart and trust; no one can take that away from you. Our bodies might have been abused, but our hearts and trust are ours to entrust to who we want to. No one can take that away.

Sorry if I’ve offended anyone, but this topic is very touchy to me personally, and I wanted my thoughts known.

Have you ever had one of those days where right at the start you knew you should have stayed in bed? Well today was one of those days for me and it’s still going wrong! First, there was no school, big blizzard here in Ohio! Second, Husband woke me up at four thirty this morning telling me he couldn’t get to work, mind you he’s home now too for the day! Third, I couldn’t go back to sleep.  That was all within the first two hours of  my morning.

I come online to escape the kids and husband, but no that’s not going to happen! Son comes down yelling wanting to go to his friends. (Excuse me do you see the three foot drift around my  freaking car?) Husband comes down next, oh yea he went back to bed, anyway he comes to me sits on the couch and says, “I’m not doing a damn thing today I don’t feel good so don’t ask.” Then he goes back up to be where he’s been all freaking day!

So I’m sitting here working away trying to ignore kids, husband, and the thought I would have to shovel all this snow when my dear friend throws a comment my way and I know it was just her venting, but I blew. (I say dear friend, one who has listened to me rant, and rave, who has been there for me for the past year for anything and has helped in many ways.)

Please, please forgive my words I wrote I may rant and rave, but it’s my way to vent and I didn’t even mean what I said. Something in me snapped. Again thank you for all you have done and being there for me. Know if you can forgive me I’m here if you want to talk.
